Clips from an interview last month with Access Hollywood host and teen heart-throb Mario Lopez on The Candace Owens Show resurfaced Wednesday morning and began trending on Twitter. In the June interview, the actor expressed that he considers parents who allow their children to choose their own sexual identity to be “dangerous” child-rearing.
During the interview uploaded in June on the popular YouTube channel PragerU , Owens asked Lopez what he thought about the bizarre trend of parents in Hollywood permitting their children to decide for themselves which sex they identify as rather than raising them as the sex they were assigned at birth.
“A lot of weird trends come out of Hollywood and one of the weirder ones, for me, is this new trend where celebrities are coming out — and I know Charlize Theron did this a few weeks ago — is saying that their child is picking their gender. And this is strange to me, and they say, ‘Oh, I looked at my child and my child was swimming in a bathtub and looked up and said, “Mommy, I’m a boy’” and that’s weird …”
Academy Award-winner Charlize Theron divulged in April that her son was transgender. “Yes, I thought she was a boy, too,” the actress admitted to The Daily Mail. “Until she looked at me when she was three years old and said, ‘I am not a boy!’”
“So there you go! I have two beautiful daughters who, just like any parent, I want to protect and I want to see thrive,” Theron added. “They were born who they are and exactly where in the world both of them get to find themselves as they grow up, and who they want to be, is not for me to decide.”

The father of three echoed Owens’s sentiments by adding that as a child, the idea of sexuality doesn’t reside in their young minds.
“When you’re a kid…you don’t know anything about sexuality yet. You’re just a kid.”
“I am trying to understand it myself, and please don’t lump me into that whole [group],” Lopez responded. “I’m kind of blown away too. Look, I’m never one to tell anyone how to parent their kids obviously and I think if you come from a place of love, you really can’t go wrong but at the same time, my God, if you’re 3 years old and you’re saying you’re feeling a certain way or you think you’re a boy or a girl or whatever the case may be, I just think it’s dangerous as a parent to make this determination then, well, OK, then you’re going to a boy or a girl, whatever the case may be … It’s sort of alarming and my gosh, I just think about the repercussions later on.”
Owens continued the conversation adding that parents who allow their kids to self-identify are virtue signaling and merely projecting their own narcissistic behaviors on to their own children.
“I think parents need to allow their kids to be kids but at the same time, you gotta be the adult in the situation,” Lopez responded. “Pause with that and—I think the formative years is when you start having those discussions and really start making these ‘declarations.’”
Lopez has not kept his conservative views concealed, but has also publicly shown his support for the LGBT community. In both 2011 and again in 2012 Lopez was chosen to present awards at the GLAAD Media Awards and later was named grand marshall of the 2015 Miami Beach Gay Pride parade.
Twitter users responded by attacking Lopez on the platform for his statements during the interview with Owens. Board member of the Trans United Fund and Bernie Sanders supporter, Alexandra Halaby, stated that Lopez was “misinformed about trans kids,” with the verified PFLAG National Twitter account adding they would be happy to provide Lopez with the education he needs to fully understand transgenderism.
“It’s unfortunate that someone who is so involved with @GLAAD like @MarioLopezExtra would be so misinformed about #trans kids. I wish that he would reach out to @sarahkateellis for some guidance on the difference between sex and gender identity,” Halaby tweeted.
“It’s okay @MarioLopezExtra. We’re here to help provide more education on what being #transgender means, the difference between #sexualorientation, #sex, and #gender… and a whole lot of other things.”
